1. (SBU) Post has reviewed reftel request for information
about critical infrastructure and key resources (CI/KR) in
Italy and has not identified any whose loss would have an
immediate, first-order impact on the national security,
economic stability, and/or national public health or safety
of the United States.
2. (SBU) In response to the second part of the request
(information about host country assessments of their own
CI/KR),post has determined that the GOI has, under the
leadership of the Office of the Prime Minister, developed
lists of critical infrastructure divided by sector (energy,
transportation, IT networks, etc.). A recent EU directive
requires member states to compile these lists. In addition,
Italy has shared the lists with NATO allies in the context of
broader Alliance efforts to promote cooperation in the field
of Crisis Management. Finally, Italy has discussed critical
infrastructure protection cooperation in the G8
Counterterrorism framework. Because most of these efforts
take place in Brussels or in G8 fora, post has not engaged
directly with the GOI on the content of the lists.
