1. (C) Post notified the GOI of DOD's intent to consolidate
operations in Gaeta on the NATO pier installation and return
to the Italian MOD that portion of the Monte Orlando Compound
allocated to U.S. Forces' use via Diplomatic Note (no.
08-00763, dated September 11) to the Italian MFA and letter
of notification no. 010-08 from the Office of Defense
Cooperation to the Italian Defense General Staff (dated
September 8). In their letter of September 24, IDGS formally
concurred with our notification. (Note: we do not normally
receive a formal reply from the MFA in these cases. The IDGS
response is sufficient for GOI concurrence).
2. (C) We expect no significant political or media interest
is expected to be generated by this action. The U.S. Navy
has already made considerable efforts to ensure continued
employment for the affected local national employees at other
installations nearby in the Naples area.
