TAGS: UNSCR PREL GG IT
SUBJECT: ITALY OPPOSES ABKHAZ AND SOUTH OSSETIAN
PARTICIPATION IN FORMAL UNSC MEETING
REF: STATE 100791
Classified By: Pol M/C Barbara Leaf for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) POLOFF raised reftel points with MFA UN Affairs Deputy
Office Director Leonardo Bencini, urging Italy to oppose
participation by Abkhaz and South Ossetian representatives in
a formal UN Security Council meeting on Georgia. Bencini
confirmed that Italy opposes such participation and, if it
came to a procedural vote on the matter, would vote "no."
Bencini said the Italian mission in New York had reported
that the U.S. would not/not oppose an Arria-style meeting
that included representatives from the breakaway regions.
Poloff clarified that the U.S. thought the most appropriate
forum in which to hear from the separatist leaders was at the
October 15 meeting in Geneva.
