(C) In a briefing to the Italian parliament on August 26, FM
Frattini characterized Russia,s unilateral decision to
recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia as "regrettable" and
added that it lacked international legality. He stated that
Georgia,s territorial integrity was "indisputable". Italian
President Napolitano noted that Frattini's position enjoyed
bipartisan support in Italy and called for the GOI to support
the formation of a common EU position. On August 27, Poloff
delivered reftel points to Marco Clemente, MFA Office
Director for Russian Affairs. Clemente reiterated that Italy
would not recognize Abkhazia or South Ossetia and would
coordinate its diplomatic efforts with other EU countries
during the upcoming extraordinary EU discussion on September
