1. (S//NF) Pakistani Embassy official indicates that the SAG
is looking to Russia for nuclear technology during a January
21 meeting with PolOff. Pakistan Embassy political officer
stated that despite the recent French President Sarkozy's
public support for a civil nuclear program in Saudi Arabia,
the SAG was more interested in Russian nuclear technology.
2. (S//NF) He added that the Pakistani Prime Minister was
planning to visit Saudi Arabia at the end of January,
although this information is neither public nor confirmed.
The Pakistani official said that if the Prime Minister did
come to Saudi Arabia, he would have one meeting with King
Abdullah in Riyadh and then proceed to either Mecca or
Medinah for Umra. He also stated that the meeting would not
discuss the Pakistani elections, but likely would focus on
bilateral relations and broader areas of "security."
According to the official, the Prime Minister might travel to
other countries in the region as well during this time.
