(C) Latvia will continue to support U.S. positions on Iran,
Burma, and DPRK, and oppose "no action" motions in the Third
Committee. In response to reftel A points, Sarmite Danne,
Head of the International Organizations division at the
Latvian MFA, said that Latvia was also "not satisfied" with
the Human Rights Council, and supported human rights
disucssions in the Third Committee. Danne emphasized the
need to keep a close eye on activity in Belarus and review
positions after elections there (see reftel B). She also
expressed general support for the U.S. position on
"defamation of religion" and freedom of expression
resolutions, but noted that Latvia would follow the EU
concensus. Danne was unable to provide information at this
time on Zimbabwe or Sudan resolutions, which she said EU
members are currently discussing in Brussels.
