1. (C) Acting UNDP Resident Representative Sanaka
Samarasinha (protect) informed us that UN Special Envoy
Ibrahim Gambari will arrive in Rangoon at 9:55 a.m. on
Thursday March 6 and is tentatively scheduled to depart at
approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday March 9. While his
itinerary has not been finalized, the UN tells us that on
Thursday he is scheduled to meet with the diplomatic corps at
2:15 p.m. and the ICRC at 3:30 p.m. Later that day, he is
expected to meet with the UN country team at the UNDP offices
in Rangoon. He is then expected to spend Friday and Saturday
in Nay Pyi Taw. On Sunday morning, he is scheduled to meet
the UN country team again, before departing the country at
approximately 4:30 p.m. Samarasinha was not aware of any
scheduled visit for Gambari to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi.
2. (C) Charge will attend Thursday's diplomatic corps
briefing. Earlier today, the French Embassy, acting as the
representative of the Presidency of the EU and a member of
the UN, formally requested the GOB arrange a second meeting
with Gambari at the end of his trip in order to brief the
diplomatic corps on the results of his visit.
