(C) POLOFF conveyed the U.S. request on August 27 that
Morocco not follow Russia in recognizing South Ossetia and
Abkhazia as independent states to Moroccan Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Head of the United Nations Division Azzedine
Farhane. Farhane stated that Morocco has no official
position on the issue at this time and added that it will
likely take the same position of the members of the
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC),which has not yet
determined its official position. He suggested that there
may be opportunities to discuss this matter with other Arab
nations during the upcoming UNGA meeting in New York.
