C O N F I D E N T I A L PRETORIA 000950 SIPDIS DEPT FOR AF/S, DRL/SEA E.O. 12958: DECL: 05/05/2018 TAGS: PHUM PREL SF ZI SUBJECT: MISSION OUTREACH ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT FREEDOM AGENDA REF: SECSTATE 044903 Classified By: Charge d'Affaires Perry Ball. Reasons 1.4(b) and (d). (C) Ambassador, DCM, Consuls General, Section heads, and working level staff engaged consistently throughout the year with Zimbabwean civil society activists, opposition party officials, political dissidents, businessmen and refugees present in South Africa who continue to fight for their basic human rights, including Zimbabweans' ability to participate in a free and fair election without fear of violence or intimidation. Most recently, Ambassador Bost, along with Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer and NSC Senior Director Bobby Pittman, hosted a dinner for the leaders of Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, to reiterate USG support for democratic change in Zimbabwe. Also, during the year, we funded two shelters for Zimbabwean refugees via Refugee Fund grants and used Democracy and Human Rights Fund monies to support human rights education for farm workers in Limpopo province, many of whom are Zimbabwean.
