Classified By: Ambassador Eric M. Bost. Reasons 1.4(b) and (d).
(C) Ambassador delivered reftel demarche on the Zimbabwe
elections to DepForMin Sue van der Merwe on March 31. Van
der Merwe said the South Africa Government (SAG) was
following the Zimbabwe election closely, and was "anxious"
that announcement of results was taking longer than expected.

violence, regardless of the outcome of the election. She
expressed appreciation for the Ambassador's call and hoped
that the USG and SAG would keep lines of communication open
