1. (C) In response to reftel demarche, Department of Foreign
Affairs (DFA) Deputy Director: Nuclear Disarmament and
Non-Proliferation Michiel Combrink said the South African
Government (SAG) is "well aware" of its obligations regarding
Iranian attempts to procure new stocks of uranium. Speaking
frankly, Combrink told PolOff on July 24 that the SAG finds
"these types of demarches unhelpful and condescending." The
SAG takes its multilateral obligations "very seriously." It
knows Iran will target South Africa for possible uranium
procurement (NFI).
2. (S) The SAG welcomes specific, actionable information from
the USG about possible illicit trade with Iran, as we
provided in the past (for example, in refs B and C).
Combrink reiterated that the SAG will fully cooperate in
those cases.
