In response to reftel, post submits the following proposals: ¶2. Name of Applicant: International Organization for Migration (IOM) Requested Funding Amount: $499,401 (federal share: $499,401) Project Title: Combating Trafficking in Children and Women in Haiti Project Duration: 12 months Proposal Abstract: The main purposes of the project are to combat trafficking of children and women through protective and preventive measures and to increase the awareness of the problem of trafficking among the general population, government authorities and NGOs. The project provides for direct assistance to child trafficking victims, enhances the capacity of the private sector to deliver services, and launches a nationwide information campaign to increase awareness of child trafficking. Regarding trafficking of women, the project undertakes national research to ascertain the scope of the problem and attempts to design appropriate remedies. ¶3. Name of Applicant: Save the Children (SC) Requested Funding Amount: $492,129 (federal share: $492,129) Project Title: Child-Centered Trafficking Prevention in Haiti Project Duration: 18 months Proposal Abstract: SC proposes to work with its network of children's rights clubs and community-based organizations in Haiti's Southeast Department to raise awareness, provide educational opportunities and sustainable livelihoods, and monitor internal child trafficking. In addition, selected parents who reclaim their children will be recruited to advocate against families placing their children into servitude. The project would test child-centered and community-based reintegration solutions, in conjunction with the appropriate Haitian state authorities, aimed at assisting child trafficking victims. ¶4. Even though the 2007 Trafficking in Persons Report classified Haiti as a special case, the proposals are still worthy of consideration. Both proposals aim to provide direct assistance to child trafficking victims and strengthen the network of local NGOs who can not only speak out against child trafficking, but also help monitor the phenomenon and assist in reintegrating child victims into their families or communities. IOM and SC already have projects underway in Haiti, and these proposals aim to strengthen and increase the scope of these projects. IOM's proposal has the added feature of trying to assess the scope and determine appropriate solutions for trafficking in women, which has visibly increased in Port-au-Prince. SANDERSON
