(C) Poloff delivered reftel points regarding the candidacy of
Farouk Hosni, the Egyptian Minister of Culture, for UNESCO
Director General to MFA Director of International
Organization Affairs Azad Belfort on December 16. Belfort
said that he was unaware of the concerns regarding Hasni's
candidacy and promised that the GOH would take the U.S.
position into account. He said he did not know of any Latin
American/Caribbean candidates that have emerged as credible
alternatives to Hosni as of yet. Belfort also asked for more
information on Hosni's controversial statements regarding
book-burning, which Poloff will provide in a follow-up
meeting.
