SUBJECT: JANUARY 22 REPATRIATION OF 243 HAITIAN MIGRANTS

On January 22, the US Coast Guard (USCG) transferred 243
Haitian migrants into the custody of the GoH in
Port-au-Prince, Haiti. On January 19, the USCG intercepted a
40-foot sail freighter carrying 80 Haitian migrants 11
nautical miles southwest of Great Inaugua, the Bahamas. On
January 20, an USCG helicopter spotted a 30-foot sail
freighter carrying 163 Haitian migrants three miles within
Cuban territorial waters. The USCG intercepted the freighter
upon its leaving Cuban territorial waters. It remains
unclear if the migrants from both vessels were attempting to
reach the U.S. or another Caribbean island.
