1. (S/Rel CAN) On July 19, Department of Foreign Affairs and
International Trade (DFAIT) Director for Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Shawn Caza agreed to reftel request,
confirming Canada would move swiftly to urge Kazakhstan to
run for a seat on the IAEA Board of Governors. If Kazakhstan
decides to submit its candidacy for the BOG, Caza promised
that Canada would also press "behind the scenes" for Middle
East/South Asia (MESA) Group countries to support Kazakhstan
rather than Syria. Caza proposed UAE and Jordan as good
fallback candidates if Kazakhstan decides against running for
the MESA seat.
