1. (C) According to Director General for the Middle East
and North Asia Gordon E. Venner of the Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trade, Parliamentary Secretary for
Foreign Affairs (and Conservative Member of Parliament)
Deepak Obhrai will lead Canada's delegation to the Berlin
Conference on June 24. Obhrai will offer information on how
Canada is spending the $300 million that then-Foreign
Minister Maxime Bernier pledged at the Paris donors'
conference on December 17 (ref b). Canada's major focus
continues to be on security-related programs; Venner cited
"strong support" within the government for the work of
General Dayton. Venner said that his staff was now
collecting additional details on these ongoing programs at
the request of the German co-chair, and promised to provide
these to Embassy as well in advance of the June 24
conference.
