1. (C) Ambassador orally briefed Foreign and Defence Policy
Advisor to the Prime Minister Susan Cartwright about the U.S.
interception of the NRO satellite on February 20. Cartwright
expressed concern about the possibility of debris landing in
populated Canadian areas, and Ambassador reassured her that
the USG would keep Canada fully informed and would cooperate
closely with Canada in that eventuality.
2. (C) Embassy followed up on February 21 by providing
reftel written notification to the chiefs of staff at the
Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the
Department of Public Safety, as well as the Privy Council
Office, reiterating our pledge to keep Canada fully informed
as more details become available.
