SUBJECT: CYPRUS WILL ATTEND VIENNA FORUM TO FIGHT HUMAN
TRAFFICKING
REF: SECSTATE 9008
(SBU) Per reftel, PolOff demarched Doros Venezis, Department
of Multilateral Affairs, Cypriot MFA on February 7 regarding
the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human
Trafficking (UN.GIFT) and the February 13-15 Vienna Forum to
Human Trafficking. Venezis reported that Cyprus would send
its permanent UN representative in Vienna to atted the Forum.
It was impossible for anyone from the Cypriot Ministry of
Interior (MoI) -- which normally represents Cyprus at
TIP-related conferences -- to travel to Vienna, since the MoI
was occupied with Cyprus's upcoming (February 17 and 24)
presidential elections. Venezis confided that the MoI also
was upset over the Forum "being rescheduled two or three
times already," which may have contributed to the decision
not to attend.
