(C) On November 13, Poloff met with MFA Desk Officer for the
Americas, Nicos Panayi, to deliver reftel demarche regarding
the November 1 announcement by President Evo Morales that he
was suspending the operations of the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration (DEA) in Bolivia. Panayi stated that Cyprus
would take reftel points under consideration and should this
issue come up at any upcoming meetings in Brussels, Cyprus
would bear USG concerns in mind. Panayi stated that
combating the drug trade is an issue of the utmost importance
for the EU and Cyprus, and they would welcome all efforts to
fight the problem at its roots. Panayi stressed that Cyprus
particularly hopes to see countries within Latin America
strengthen their regional cooperation to combat narcotics
production and trafficking.
