SUBJECT: CYPRUS: SUPPORT FOR EGYPT'S MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ON AVIAN
AND PANDEMIC INFLUENZA IN COLLABORATION WITH IPAPI

(SBU) Per reftel request, the Embassy on August 28 delivered a
written demarche on the October avian and pandemic influenza
conference to high-level contacts at the Foreign, Health, and
Agriculture Ministries. In a follow-up conversation on September
11, Ministry of Health Officer Elena Makriyiorgi informed the
Embassy that Cyprus would be represented at the conference by Health
Minister Christos Patsalides. Regarding possible Cypriot donations,
Makriyiorgi stated that Cyprus had pledged "a small amount" of
assistance to fight avian and pandemic influenza; she was unable to
provide the exact figure, however, or whether it had been disbursed
or not. Post will report Septel as new information becomes
available.
