UNCLAS NICOSIA 000673 SIPDIS DEPARTMENT FOR EUR/SE, EUR/PGI (BUCKNEBERG),G/TIP (TOWNSEND) E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: KCRM KWMN PGOV PHUM PREL CY SUBJECT: TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS HOTLINE NUMBERS FOR CYPRUS REF: SECSTATE 85859 In response to Reftel, theEmbassy provides the following information regarding telephone hotlines for TIP victims in Cyprus: -- In the government-controlled portion of the island, the Republic of Cyprus Police maintain a 24-hour hotline, the "Citizens' Line," which provides attention to victims of all types of crimes, not just trafficking. Hotline staff address the urgency of the calls, redirecting callers to appropriate police units as necessary. TIP victims can access the call system by dialing 1460. There are no hotlines operated by NGOs or civil society. -- In the Turkish Cypriot-administered area, the "Ministry of Health" in 2006 established a hotline, accessed by dialing 157, that directed TIP victims to the mobile telephone of a Turkish- and Russian-speaking nurse. Recent Embassy attempts to test the system failed, however, as the telephone was inactive or out-of-service. Cohen
