1. (U) The Indian parliamentary session which began on
October 17 and was scheduled to run through November 21 ended
early when the ruling United Progressive Alliance government
and the opoosition Bharatiya Janata Party agreed to adourn
today. Cutting short the session allows lawmakers to go home
for Diwali next week and, after that, to campaign in several
crucial state assembly elections beginning on November 14.
The session will recovene on December 10, after state
elections have been completed in five states states --
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram.
At that time, assembly elections would still be pending only
in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
