1. (SBU) POLOFF delivered reftel demarche to MEA
Undersecretary (United Nations Political) Vishwesh Negi on
January 25. Negi had hinted to POLOFF on January 23 that
Lidder would be extended, saying that the official response
would come from the Mission in NYC, but that the answer was
"good." However, on January 24, the office of the Minister
of State for Defense contacted Naval Attache to inform that
Lidder would not be extended, but instead would be
immediately recalled to New Delhi to take another posting.
On January 25, when POLOFF informed Negi of the MOD's
message, Negi expressed surprise, even questioning if this
was a joke. POLOFF asked him to confirm with the MOD, and
to get back to us with a confirmation early the week of
January 28, to which he agreed.
