Post delivered reftel invitation and related information to
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via diplomatic note on
December 20. Meeting with the Ambassador on December 21,
Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusef bin Alawi said
that Oman would be pleased to join the Contact Group on
Somali Piracy (CGSP) and added that Oman's newly designated
Chief for International Maritime Affairs, a retired navy
admiral, would attend the proposed inaugural CGSP meeting in
New York in January 2009. Bin Alawi also noted that Oman
would participate in a conference sponsored by the
International Maritime Organization (IMO) scheduled for
January in Djibouti to discuss piracy off the coast of
Somalia and hoped that this would not conflict with the New
York meeting.
