(C) Deputy Chief of Mission delivered reftel demarche on
January 15 to Mohammad al-Hassan, Director of Political
Affairs for Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusef
bin Alawi. Al Hassan expressed no objection to the proposed
course of action regarding the future status of Kosovo,
although he refrained from definitively stating that the
Omani government would quickly recognize Kosovo's
independence. He also advised the U.S. to consult with both
the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Conference
(OIC) to help ensure widespread support in the Arab and
Muslim world for a declaration of independence by Kosovo.
