(C) Post delivered ref A letter from the Secretary to
Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusef bin Alawi on
May 12 via diplomatic note. In a June 1 meeting with bin
Alawi, the Ambassador highlighted the points in the
Secretary's letter and again encouraged Oman to recognize
Kosovo (ref B). Bin Alawi noted that Oman did not oppose
independence for Kosovo and would eventually "go along with
international consensus." He added, however, that a
statement recognizing Kosovo would not benefit Omani
interests and made clear that the government had no plans to
recognize Kosovo anytime soon.
