On March 4, we passed reftel demarche to MFA Attache Sergey
Zhdanov, who reiterated Russia's support of UNSCR 1798.
Zhdanov acknowledged that a continued UN presence is critical
to stability in the region, and posited that any change in
the UN's posture would need to be well thought-out. At this
time, Zhdanov reported Russia had no formal positions
regarding sanctions or a restructuring of UNMEE's mission.
We will follow up with the MFA in the coming days to see if
the GOR has any more on this subject.
