Post requests an expedited response to this Leahy vetting request for participants in a DOJ/ATF Firearms Identification and Trafficking course to commence in Mexico City on April 10, 2008. The trafficking of arms into Mexico from the U.S. represents a very sensitive issue for the GOM as the USG seeks to deepen cooperation with Mexico in fighting organized crime. This course represents an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the USG commitment to fighting arms trafficking and strengthening our shared efforts in this area. The GOM just provided post with the names of individuals it proposes participate in this course. Post has completed its own internal vetting process. Post respects the Department's request for at least 10 business days to conduct its vetting check. Given the importance of this course to advancing USG objectives, Post would appreciate receiving a response from the Department before April 10, fewer than the normally prescribed minimum of 10 business days. Please advise soonest as Post will need to cancel instructors and interpreters for this course in the event participants are not vetted before the course commences. ¶2.
