Poloff explained the expansion of U.S. sanctions on Burma
through the signing of the JADE Act of 2008 and that the
United States has taken action to ensure the Act will not
impede humanitarian relief for Cyclone Nargis victims.
Fernandez-Arias said that within the EU, France and the UK
have previously taken the lead on the issue of Burma
sanctions and will, more than likely, continue to do so. He
said the GOS supports strict sanctions and will likely follow
an EU consensus on the matter.
