(C) The UK supports the renewal of UN Western Sahara Special
Envoy Peter Van Walsum's contract, as well as a fifth round
of talks this year in October or November, FCO Middle East
North Africa Director John Jenkins told us August 22 in
response to ref A demarche. FCO Morocco/Western Sahara Desk
Officer Fiona Rumney said HMG thinks Van Walsum has done an
excellent job and supports renewal of his contract, although
they understand the Polisario's concerns as well. UKUN was
prepared to push renewal with the UN SYG (per ref B, now
OBE),Rumney said. She confirmed that the UK supports a
fifth round of talks in the time period after Ramadan.
Tripoli minimize considered.
