TO ATTEND UN THEMATIC DEBATE ON CLIMATE CHANGE
1. (SBU) On February 5, the Undersecretary for the
International Relations Department at the Slovenian
Environmental Ministry, Andrej Kranjc, who also headed
Slovenia's EU presidency delegation at the Major Economies
Meeting (MEM) in Honolulu, told Emboff that the MEM meetings
sparked a constructive discussion and noted that everyone was
asking the United States to increase its leadership on the
climate change issue. Kranjc said he would join Slovenia's
delegation representing the EU presidency, made up of
President Danilo Turk, Environmental Minister Janez Podobnik,
and Environmental Ministry spokesperson Emil Ferjancic, to
attend the February 11-12 United Nations General Assembly's
high-level thematic debate on climate change. The party will
travel to New York on February 9. Emboff will meet with
Kranjc upon their return next week for a full read-out on the
MEM and UN discussions.
