(C) On October 14, Emboff met with Tomaz Mencin, Head of the
MFA's Division for Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, and
Ambassador Maja Lovrencic-Svetek, who recently returned from
Bratislava and will work on Afghanistan, to request Slovenian
support for Afghan elections (reftel). Mencin explained that
the current government will not take any new initiatives, and
the MFA will have to wait and see how the new government will
approach the issue. In the meantime, Mencin and
Lovrencic-Svetek undertook to discuss our request with the
Development Assistance Division. Mencin also cited the EU's
June GAERC conclusions, when the EU stated its support for
presidential and parliamentary elections in Afghanistan.
