SUBJECT: SLOVENIA SUPPORTS THIRD COMMITTEE 2008 HUMAN
RIGHTS PRIORITIES
REF: SECSTATE 95334
Classified By: CDA Brad Freden, reasons 1.4(b,d)
(C) On September 10, emboff delivered reftel demarche to
Smiljana Knez, Minister Plenipotentiary in the Slovenian
MFA's International Organization and Human Security Division,
to encourage Slovenian support for human rights resolutions
during the upcoming UNGA Third Committee session. Knez was
on board with two of our four requests. She said that
Slovenia would oppose "no-action" motions and support the
country-specific resolutions on Iran, Burma, and DPRK. She
indicated, however, that Zimbabwe and the issue of prisoners
of conscience were both more complicated and that Slovenia
therefore needed more time to develop its position. She said
she could not provide an immediate response, but undertook to
get back with us on September 16. We will report any further
response.
