C O N F I D E N T I A L LJUBLJANA 000365 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: DECL: 08/11/2018 TAGS: PREL PGOV GG RU SI SUBJECT: U.S. PROPOSED ELEMENTS FOR EU STATEMENT ON GEORGIA "IN LINE" WITH SLOVENIA'S PERSPECTIVE REF: SECSTATE 86108 Classified By: Amb. Yousif B. Ghafari, reasons 1.4(b,d) (C) On August 12, Emboffs met with Ada Filip-Slivnik, Head of Division for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to encourage Slovenian support for a strong EU statement concerning the situation in Georgia (reftel). She agreed that a unified voice from the US, EU, and NATO was important. Filip-Slivnik said that the proposed US language for a statement was "in line" with Slovenia's perspective, but she suggested that the statement should also include support and respect for the rights of minorities within Georgia. She commented, however, that any statement "should condemn" both Russia and Georgia. She stated that Slovenia fully supported Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity, and any solutions should be "within that framework." GHAFARI
