(U) On May 12, Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Department
of Agriculture,s Food Safety and Inspection Service Bryce
Quick met with Slovenian Director of the Department of Safe
Food Dr. Blaza Nahtigal to discuss the upcoming election of
the new Chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Drawing
on reftel points, Quick presented the strengths of the U.S.
candidate, current Vice Chair of Codex, Dr. Karen Hulebak.
(Note. Dr. Hulebak was scheduled to attend the meeting as
well but the airline canceled the flight to Slovenia. End
note) Nahtigal appeared to show great interest in Dr.
Hulabak's candidacy but Nahtigal commented that the Malaysian
embassy has been aggressively promoting the Malaysian
candidate.
