UNESCO DG CANDIDATE
REF: SECSTATE 130916
Classified By: A/Political Counselor Thomas M. Rosenberger for reasons

(C) In response to reftel points on USG concerns over
Egyptian Cultural Minister Farouk Hosni's potential candidacy
for UNESCO Director-General, MFA International Organizations
Deputy Director Dr. Hamad Bou Rahma told A/POLCOUNS on
December 16 that he was unaware of the controversy
surrounding Hosni. Bou Rahma agreed that the statements
attributed to Hosni -- as relayed in the demarche -- would be
harmful to UNESCO's image and detract from its mandates.
However, he added, he understood Hosni to be the Arab
League's candidate for the post, and that it was unlikely for
the league to rally around another candidate.
