REQUEST FOR SOMALIA

(SBU) Defense Attache's Office today conveyed to Ministry of
Defense (MOD) counterparts reftel points concerning the
possibility of Royal Malaysian Navy ships providing escort
assistance to World Food Program shipments to Somalia. MOD
is considering our request, but as of COB September 19 had
not provided a response. In addition, POLOFF contacted the
National Security Council's maritime security division, but
we have not received a response as of this writing. Post
will continue to follow-up with the GOM and report back as
soon as we hear something.
