(U) Post nominates Economic Officer Christopher Corkey for admission to PE 142, the Denver Resource Economics Course, scheduled July 7-11 (Ref). Mr. Corkey is an Entry Level Officer, Economic Cone, posted to the Economic section of Embassy Kinshasa until July 2009. (U) Mr. Corkey,s reporting requirements focus primarily on the extractive industries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He works with representatives of several mining companies, including Freeport McMoRan, the largest private U.S. investment in the DRC. The extractive industries portfolio of the DRC, a resource-rich but largely undeveloped country, includes copper, cobalt, diamonds, gold, cassiterite, petroleum, and timber. The PE 142 course would benefit the Economic section, as well as the end-users of Kinshasa reporting, by giving Mr. Corkey a better understanding of the natural resources sector. The course would also enable Mr. Corkey to establish useful contacts within the U.S. Geological Survey and other relevant U.S.-based organizations. GARVELINK
