1. In response to inquiries made per reftel, Post has received the
following letter, dated July 10, 2008, from Mr. R. Karl James,
General Manager, Jamaica Cane Products Sales Limited:
(Begin text)
"Jamaica projects to use approximately 62,000 tons of raw sugar
during the FY 07/08.
Jamaica will not be able to deliver any sugar against its USA TRQ
for 2008. The sugar crop has been adversely affected by the
Hurricane Dean of last year August. This was followed by a very
rainy November and December which delayed the start of the sugar
crop. The 2008 crop saw the rainiest reaping season for many years.
All the factors identified had the effect of significantly reducing
the amount of cane available and the quantity of sugar planned for.
We will not be able to meet our export obligations in full.
If the U.S. were to allocate additional quota to be delivered by
September 30, 2008 Jamaica will not be able to participate.
We are hoping for a better crop next year."
