PROPORTIONAL SIDE ANNOUNCED
REF: KATHMANDU 468
On May 8, Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel
announced the final results of Nepal's April 10 Constituent
Assembly (CA) election. Specifically, Pokhrel announced the
individual names of the 335 candidates elected to the
601-member Assembly under the proportional representation
(PR) system. The PR candidates come from 25 parties (see
reftel for details),and were selected by the respective
party leaderships after the election from lists submitted by
the parties prior to the election, subject to certain quotas
for marginalized groups, including women. The Election
Commission had previously announced the winners of the CA's
240 first-past-the-post contests as those results became
available. The announcement by the Chief Commissioner starts
the clock for the Prime Minister to hold the Assembly's first
meeting. Under the Interim Constitution, the CA must sit
within 21 days -- i.e., no later than May 29.
