Final Results Announced

1. The Election Commission of Nepal (EC) has released the
final results from the April 10 Constituent Assembly (CA)
election. On the afternoon of April 25, the EC informed 25
parties how many proportional representation seats each is
entitled to fill in the Assembly. The parties have seven
days to submit their lists.

2. The following 25 parties will sit in the 601-member CA:

Communist Party of Nepal - Maoist: 218 seats

Nepali Congress (NC): 109

Communist Party of Nepal (UML): 103

Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF): 50

Terai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP): 20

Sadbhavana Party (SP): 9

Rastriya Prajantantra Party (RPP): 8

Communist Party of Nepal (ML): 8

Janamorcha Nepal: 7

Communist Party of Nepal (United): 5

Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal: 4

Rastriya Janamorcha: 4

Nepal Workers and Peasants Party: 4

representation seats follow. Twenty-five parties won at

percent of the vote.

Maoists: 29.3 percent; 100 seats

NC: 21.1 percent; 73 seats

UML: 20.3 percent; 70 seats

MPRF: 6.3 percent; 22 seats

TMDP: 3.2 percent; 11 seats

RPP: 2.5 percent; 8 seats

Communist Party of Nepal (ML): 2.3 percent; 8 seats

SP: 5 seats

Janamorcha Nepal: 5 seats

Communist Party of Nepal (United): 5 seats

Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal: 4 seats

First-Past-the-Post Results

4. The final results for the CA's 240 first-past-the-post
seats follow. Nine parties won at least one seat. Two
independents also were elected. By-elections will be held in
five of the 240 constituencies because the same candidate won
in two places. The date of the by-elections has yet to be
determined. (Note: When a candidate has won in two of the
240 first-past-the-post races, a seat has been subtracted
from the total because the winner is under obligation to
resign one of the seats within 30 days. This affects two
Maoists -- Pushpa Dahal, aka Prachanda, and Local Development
Minister Dev Gurung; one NC candidate -- former Prime
Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba; and two MPRF candidates -- MPRF
head Upendra Yadav and former NC stalwart Bijay Gachchhadar.
