ATTACK
Classified By: Consul General Jake Walles, per reasons 1.4 (b) and (d)
1. (C) Local press and police reported four Israelis dead
and 36 wounded after a Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem
on a bulldozer attacked several cars and toppled a public bus
in downtown Jerusalem shortly after noon on July 2. As of
3:00 local time, Post had no reports of American citizen
casualties in the attack.
2. (C) Israeli police contacts informed RSO that the
bulldozer was driven by Hussam Duweik, a Palestinian resident
of East Jerusalem working on the Jerusalem lightrail project.
Duweik reportedly removed the bulldozer from the lightrail
construction site on Jaffa Street where he worked and drove a
short distance against traffic, hitting several cars and a
bus. Local press reported that an off-duty soldier shot and
killed Duweik in the cab of the bulldozer.
3. (C) Police contacts told ConGen they have received no
claims of responsibility for the attack from terrorist
organizations.
