1. (S) ACTION REQUEST: Mission requests Department's
assistance in providing additional USG information on Iran's
nuclear program, and Department talking points, to be
provided to President Yudhoyono. Mission requests that these
be provided NLT March 5.
2. (S) SBY TO IRAN: President Yudhoyono plans to visit Iran
during the second week of March. Presidential Advisor Dino
Djalal and Department of Foreign Affairs Director General for
Asian and African Affairs Primo Joelianto both mentioned the
trip in separate meetings with EAP DAS Scot Marciel on
February 26. According to Djalal, Yudhoyono intends to stop
in Iran on his way to the Organization of the Islamic
Conference (OIC) summit in Senegal on March 13-14. He will
likely depart Jakarta March 8 or 9.
3. (S) OPEN TO U.S. VIEWS: Djalal said he would welcome a
USG analysis of Iran's nuclear program prior to the trip. He
also indicated that SBY would be open to USG input. Djalal
voiced support for a multilateral arrangement to deal with
the issue of uranium enrichment if Iran could be brought on
board. (Note: Mission has delivered Department points refs
b-c to officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs and
will also convey to Djalal on February 28.)
4. (SBU) DAS Marciel cleared this message. Mission will
report additional discussion from DAS Marciel's meetings
septel.
