1. (C) SUMMARY: POLOFF delivered reftel demarche urging
support for the UN's International Independent Investigation
Commission and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to the
Department of Foreign Affairs (DEPLU) on December 16. Our
contact said the GOI generally supported the UN's work in
Lebanon, but has not yet formulated a position on the
resolution. END SUMMARY.
2. (C) On December 16, POLOFF delivered reftel demarche
regarding the UN International Independent Investigation
Commission (UNIIIC) and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon
(STL) to Fikry Cassidy, Deputy Director for International
Security and Disarmament Affairs at DEPLU. POLOFF
underscored the importance of the UNIIIC and the STL and
urged Indonesia to support a UNSC resolution extending the
UNIIIC's mandate. He also encouraged Indonesia to consider
financial support for the STL's operations.
3. (C) Cassidy, taking the points on board, responded that
Indonesia generally supported the UN's efforts in Lebanon and
had already sent military and police personnel to participate
in peacekeeping operations there. However, Indonesia has not
yet finalized its position on the UNIIIC and the STL.
Cassidy promised that GOI officials would take USG views into
account as they reviewed the matter.
