1. (C) SUMMARY: Mission has reviewed reftel points
regarding the upcoming Iran nuclear conference with key GOI
contacts. We urged the GOI not to participate. Indonesian
officials said they were unaware of the conference, but
promised to review USG views on the matter. END SUMMARY.
2. (C) On November 19, POLOFF delivered reftel points to
Andy Rachmianto, Deputy Director for International Security
and Disarmament Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs
(DEPLU). POLOFF underscored that Iran continued to defy UN
Security Council resolutions regarding its nuclear program
and that Iran still had not complied fully with IAEA
requirements. POLOFF urged the Indonesian government not to
participate in the November 30 conference on "Nuclear Power
Plants, Environmental and Sustainable Development" in Iran.
Given Iran's continued defiance of nonproliferation norms,
the international community should not send any signals that
might lend legitimacy to Iran on the nuclear front.
3. (C) Rachmianto responded that he was unaware of the
Iranian conference. He said he would look into the matter
and promised to review USG views on the subject.
4. (SBU) Econoff also raised the conference with the GOI's
Directorate General for Electric Power, the authority within
the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources responsible for
nuclear power. They were similarly unaware of the Iranian
conference.
