1. (C) SUMMARY: Indonesia supports the U.S. position that
the U.N. Mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) should be
terminated because it is no longer supported by either
nation. Our contacts confirm that the GOI will work with the
USG on a new resolution that addresses key issues. END
SUMMARY.
2. (C) Indonesia has decided to support the USG position
regarding the future of UNMEE. Fikry Cassidy, Deputy
Director for International Security and Disarmament Affairs
at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DEPLU),told POLOFF on
July 29 that the GOI agreed that UNMEE was no longer viable
because neither Ethiopia nor Eritrea supported it. That
said, Indonesia believed that the U.N. should remain engaged
on the issue and would support a new resolution containing
the elements outlined in Ref B, including:
--Terminate UNMEE;
--Call on Ethiopia and Eritrea to maintain their commitments
to the Algiers Agreements; and,
--Request the Secretary General to use his good offices to
support normalized relations between the two countries and to
facilitate the implementation of the Algiers Agreements.
3. (C) Cassidy said the Indonesian Mission to the UN looked
forward to working with USUN on a new resolution covering the
matter.
