1. (C) SUMMARY: On July 9, DCM delivered ref A demarche
concerning the draft UNSC resolution on Zimbabwe to a senior
Indonesian official. The official said the GOI would
consider USG views as it formulated its position. Russian
and Chinese embassy officials offered no substantive comment
on their capitals' positions. END SUMMARY
2. (C) On July 9, the DCM delivered ref A demarche urging
support for a UNSC resolution on Zimbabwe to Bunyan Suprapto,
Director for North American Affairs at the Department of
Foreign Affairs. DCM emphasized the need to send the
strongest signal possible to the government of Zimbabwe to
end the violence and begin genuine dialogue with the
opposition. The situation in Zimbabwe was a threat to the
entire southern African region. G-8 leaders meeting in Japan
had agreed on the need for the international community to
take strong action against those responsible for the
violence.
3. (C) Suprapto said he understood the USG position and
promised to consult with other Indonesian officials on the
matter. He said Indonesia would carefully consider USG views
as it decided how to move forward on this issue.
4. (C) DCM also raised ref A points with Russian CDA Sergey
Tolchenov and Chinese CDA Yang Lin Zhu in the context of a
larger meeting at which other embassies were present.
Tolchenov said he had received no new instructions. Yang
offered no comment.
