SUBJECT: PAKISTAN COMMITMENT TO COESPU INVITATION FOR
UNAMID-RELATED TRAINING
REF: SECSTATE 42003
(U) On May 7, Poloff and Italian Defense Attache jointly
demarched with Haider Shah, Director of the United Nations I
Desk at the MFA, the invitation to participate in the
upcoming training course at the Center of Excellence for
Stability Police Units (COESPU) for United Nations - African
Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) countries. This
conversation was a follow-up to a faxed invitation sent to
Shah by the Italian Embassy on April 30. Shah notified the
Ministries of Defense and Interior and felt certain that
Pakistan would participate in the training. However, he
noted that the GOP had reservations about committing to this
training until it was given better clarity from the
Government of Italy on the training that would be offered and
whether it will be more appropriate to nominate military or
civilian police officers, both of whom participate in the
peacekeeping effort.
