1. (C) In a March 6 meeting with Khalilullah Qazi, MFA's
Director General for Disarmament, Poloff drew on reftel
points to provide information on the UN Security Council's
adoption of Resolution 1803 imposing further sanctions on
Iran. Qazi replied that Pakistan did not support the
additional sanctions, but wanted to see the issue resolved
diplomatically within the IAEA. Iran, Qazi noted, should
live up to its NPT obligations, but should also have access
to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. He was
concerned the additional sanctions would only serve to
exacerbate regional tensions and leave Iran feeling
increasingly besieged by the international community.
