1. (C) On June 22, Poloff delivered reftel demarche and
updated P5 1 package for Iran to Leila Villatoro, Deputy
Director of Multilateral Policy at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (MFA). Villatoro thanked Poloff for the information
and promissed to forwarded it to the Guatemalan Mission in
New York and those responsible for nuclear issues in the MFA.
She expressed support in principle for international efforts
to find a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
She informed Poloff that GOG policy on issues such as this
were largely developed by the Guatemalan Mission in New York,
with little input from the MFA. She added that if the U.S.
wanted to influence Guatemalan voting or opinion on the
myriad of issues relating to Iran and IAEA, it would be more
effective to directly approach the Guatemalan Mission in New
York.
